At Y.A.L.E. School Philadelphia, the community is our classroom. Our students experience community-based instruction in the vibrant and bustling Manayunk neighborhood and surrounding area. Students plan and participate in community projects and service-learning opportunities that encourage them to grow into productive and responsible citizens.
Through frequent supervised trips into the community, students may learn to generalize important skills such as using public transportation for personal mobility, personal finance and banking, shopping for groceries, eating at restaurants, making doctor’s appointments, or accessing local municipal services and resources such as public libraries, parks, and hospitals.
Our students will also take on service-learning projects in an effort to “give back” to the local community and learn essential lessons about civic engagement. For example, students may organize a food drive for a local food bank, volunteer to plant trees in a public park, or collect donations for homeless shelters.
